This Saturday's Artist Feature is Lisa of Scribblescrab! We met Lisa in the Artist Alley at Anime Fest Wichita this past summer. She is a talented artist and a great person to talk to. If you love cute fujoshi fan art things, she has all the things. ;) She is based out of Colorado and attends many conventions. Go check out her cute comics on her Tumblr and her boba tea charms in her Storenvy after reading the interview! :D
What is your Favorite color?
Favorite color is green! I also love greys, purples, pink, and teal.
What is your favorite food?
Every food (sushi and Korean soft tofu stew).
What piqued your interest in art?
I’ve been doing art basically my whole life, always loved cartoons and comics! Sister was into art and had artistic parents (though neither of them drew like my sister and I do) so they always encouraged all the weird art things we did growing up. I took a break from drawing for 5 years in college and picked up knitting instead but started drawing again a few years ago and am improving again steadily and loving it.
Who is your favorite artist?
It’s really hard to pinpoint one artist that is my favorite. I love doing comics so I have a few mangaka that I really love: Kumota Haruko, Hayakawa Nojiko, Sumomo Yumeka, and so many others.
What is your favorite medium?
I tend to do digital paintings with Paint Tool Sai but my favorite traditional media is always ink! There’s so much versatility and variety in what you can do.
What are your favorite things to draw?
Flowers! People kissing! Hands! People holding hands and kissing with flowers around them!!
What are you working on now?
I’m working on some prints for some upcoming conventions I’ll be selling at. I’m focusing on more video game/comic related things this time around. The most current one is a holographic Mercy from Overwatch inspired by renaissance Christian artwork (just trust me here). I’m also working on some original character things on the side, trying to finish more original pieces. Considering I did 11 sketches this week of them I’d say I’m on a good track haha.
What are your favorite games/tv shows?
As for games (video games) I’m a puzzle/classic RPG kind of person: Pikmin, Legend of Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Tetris, Katamari Damacy, Pokemon, Shadow of the Colossus, Yoshi’s Island. As for TV shows I tend to still watch mostly nerdy things and cartoons: Adventure Time, Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls, Steven Universe, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Walking Dead, Avatar the Last Airbender. I’m really loving the new reboot of Voltron: Legendary Defender right now!! (Please watch it on Netflix please)
What would you like to say to aspiring artists?
Keep making but don’t force yourself. If you’re in a funk don’t force it, it’ll come out the way you want it when you’ve taken a rest from it. Don’t compare and be jealous, be inspired and motivated. Stop worrying about finding and having a “style”, you will always be changing your art and you’ll settle into your own art.
If you’re unsatisfied with your art that means you’re on the cusp of changing, you’re noticing things you’d like to change so here’s the time to slowly start doing so! Stop self-deprecating! It’s an insult to yourself and others when you say “I love your art, it’s so much better than mine! Mine is crap!” Have confidence in things you do, there will always be people better than you and you will always be better than someone at something, this is how you learn and grow and learn to look at your artwork critically.
Finally don’t let others doubt you. If you want to pursue art then do it. There are too many people who will doubt you but there will be so many more who will support you and help you out.
Any questions you have for us?
Favorite Pokemon? (Mine is mismagius)
Currently since Gen5 my favorite has been Espurr. Before that it was (and still) Bulbasaur (first gen ftw!)...and Leafeon and lots of grass types.
On a scale of 1-10 how do you feel about the movie Space Jam? 1 being worst movie ever created and 10 being “should be in hall of fame”. (I am at a solid 9.5)
Uhh obviously a 10. Space Jam is awesome. At least in this case I'm going to trust my 7-8 year old self judgement and say it's a 10. XD
Thanks so much Lisa for doing the interview! We hope it's not the last time we see you (totally will hit you up if we're in your neck of the woods for fooooood!!)! Again, don't forget to follow her on Tumblr and Storenvy for comics and pretty things~
Until the next Artist Feature~
